Guided runs for the visually impaired
Anything from an easy jog to a half marathon, you decide the pace (so long as I can keep up with you!). I'll guide you safely. We can run all the way or walk where the ground is uneven or steep - you choose.
Group runs
At the start
· Introduce leaders and participants, explaining running qualifications, capabilities & experience
· Discuss the planned run
· Ensure everyone is adequately prepared and properly equipped
· Participants complete a form showing name, address, contact details, medical conditions and disclaimer
· Explain the arrangements, hazards and risk assessment; emphasise the need to keep together, particularly to faster runners who may be tempted to go ahead.
Warm up
· Either at the start venue or nearby, the group will be led through a series of warm up activities such as walking, skipping and circling arms..
During the run
· Start slowly and walk after a few minutes: check that all participants are comfortable
· Keep the group together. Fast runners may be given opportunities to run ahead short distances (e.g. to top of a slope) and either wait there or return to the group.
· Adjust the pace according to the group’s abilities, ensuring that everybody is comfortable
· Walk up steep hills, difficult terrain and where the scenery deserves it
· Stop at view points and places of interest
· Keep group informed of progress and of the route ahead
After the run
· Lead the group through a series of stretching exercises
· Request feedback
